Our Kaupapa/Values

Global Focus Aotearoa is a values based organisation. Our work is underpinned by commitment to:

Our Philosophy

Information empowers; access to information is a fundamental human right. With accurate and comprehensive information people are able to make the best decisions about their own lives and how they engage with the world around them.

Education can develop skills, attitudes and values to bring about a more just and sustainable world. Global Education enables people to understand the links between their own lives and those of people throughout the world.

Action for a just world; Global Focus Aotearoa provides information on ways to help create a just world where human rights are upheld and respected, poverty is no longer tolerated, development is people-centred, holistic and sustainable, and we all recognise the interconnectivity of our lives and the world that we live in.

A Just Aotearoa

Since our establishment in 1993 we have acknowledged the importance of te Tiriti o Waitangi through its inclusion in our organisational values. Te Tiriti informs our perspective of development both in Aotearoa New Zealand and internationally.

In 2002 the ‘A Just Aotearoa’ (AJA) project team was formed. The AJA project is part of the core business of the organisation and ensures we are honouring our commitment to te Tiriti.

The AJA project has focused on staff and board development, relationship building and policy developments. It gives impetus to ensure we are meeting our 2007-2011 Strategic Plan Key Outcome of:

Working relationships with tangata whenua based on recognition of indigenous human rights, including those guaranteed under Te Tiriti o Waitangi that inform our organisational culture and work practices.

AJA continues to work towards a vision for Global Focus Aotearoa based upon the key principle that the organisation’s commitment to, and relationship with, te Tiriti o Waitangi is a living and evolving process. We recognise that bringing staff on board and maintaining their support is an ongoing process and we work to provide the necessary education, training and resources to build the confidence and ability of staff to engage in this process.

In 2009 we signed a Memorandum of Partnership with Te Iwi O Ngati Tukorehe with the aim of working together to achieve help achieve the key organisational outcomes of Te Iwi O Ngati Tukorehe and Global Focus Aotearoa. The formation of this partnership is a welcomed and significant step for our organisation and we look forward to developing a long term and mutually beneficial relationship with Ngati Tukorehe.

We recognise te Tiriti o Waitangi, the Maori language version of the Treaty of Waitangi, as this reflects our values and ensures we are approaching indigenous rights issues consistently. Further, under international law it is customary that treaties are interpreted using the indigenous language version.
